37.1 Commentary

a) Integrity Maintenance:

Ensure installation work maintains the fire detection and alarm system's integrity and minimizes system disablement during maintenance or modifications.

b) Standards Compliance:

Follow BS 7671 for installation practices and workmanship.

c) Fire Protection:

Seal penetrations for cables, conduit, or trunking to prevent the passage of fire or smoke, regardless of the construction's fire resistance rating.

37.2 Recommendations

The following recommendations are applicable.

a) Standards Compliance:

Follow BS 7671; this standard takes precedence if conflicts with other recommendations arise.

b) Cable Installation:

● Mounting: Fix cables neatly and securely, avoiding reliance on suspended ceilings.

● Wiring Compliance: Adhere to relevant wiring standards (26.2f to 26.2o).

● Joints: Minimize cable joints outside equipment enclosures.

● Routing: Choose cable routes as per recommended guidelines (26.2).

c) Conduit and Cable Protection:

● External Walls: Use metal or non-hygroscopic sleeves, sealed and sloped to prevent water entry.

● Internal Walls: Use smooth-bore sleeves if needed for additional protection.

● Floors: Sleeves must extend at least 300 mm above floor level.

d) Fire Stopping:

● Penetrations: Seal holes around cables, conduits, etc., with fire-stopping materials to maintain fire resistance.

● Channels and Ducts: Provide fire-resistant barriers if necessary; otherwise, ensure the construction offers equivalent fire resistance
